The ESG group offers an advanced formation and research introduction course, in the form of a research doctorate in Psychology of Programming and Artificial Intelligence. The Ph.D. course includes interdisciplinary studies, which are referred on one hand to the fields of the Computer Science and on the other to the Human Science. The aim is that of providing a high training as much wide as possible and inclusive of many dimension. In order to create new researchers, endowed with advanced competencies. In fact, the didactic structure of the Ph.D. course foresees the study of areas regarding both the cognitive modelling and the realisation of intelligent systems. Through the exploration of the new emerging scientific models and especially of the research and production methodology techniques of those artefacts, that such models subtend, students will be able to get advanced skills.The Psychology of Programming that acts as general conceptual framework, is the opportunity to explore areas such as the Artificial Intelligence and the Artificial Life, the Evolutionary Robotics and the Educational Technology. The methodological stress set by programme of studies of the Ph.D. course concerns the construction or the planning of advanced intelligent systems, applicable in different context (that comprehends the school, the art, and the advanced formation).The proposing group worked actively in the Psychology of Programming and in some areas, arguments of the training curriculum, by participating in meetings and by presenting scientific works. It organised for the year 2000 the most important meeting about the Psychology of Programming in Calabria. A very important aspect of the programme of studies of the Ph.D. course regards the use of the advanced technology. It will be studied the technology as object, the technology as knowledge, the technology as activity, the technology as process, as a socio-cultural system, as planning, by exploring not only the engineering aspects of the process, but also creative and artistic aspects. Another aspect regarding the advanced training is the acquisition of the research methods. The Science's objective is the achievement of the knowledge and the comprehension of the natural and artificial phenomena. As some authors maintain, the future of the science foresees a skilful integration of theory, experimentation and computerised model. The procedure to investigate the phenomena until some time ago foresaw the positivist and quantitative paradigm, the interpretative or qualitative paradigm and the critic or neo-Marxist theory paradigm. At the moment it seems that such approaches miss the objective of the phenomena's knowledge and another fan of opportunities is opened, so widening he breath of the scientific and technological research.
The principal methods that will be utilised in the Ph.D. course are the following:
Quantitative method: experimental, half-experimental, correlation and other methods whose objective is the collection of quantitative data and their analysis, by using the inferential statistics.
Qualitative method: observation, case-study, diaries, interviews, and other methods (whose first objective is the collection of quantitative data and their analysis, by using ethological and ethnographic approaches).
Critical theory method: deconstruction of text and technologies that direct them through the binary opposition research, with the aim of revealing possible problems linked to minority classes.
The state of art method: many research synthesis' form that firstly include the analysis and the integration of the other research forms through the bibliographic research and the (metanalisi).
Mixed methods: research approaches that combine an integrated use of the available methods, usually quantitative and qualitative, in order to have different views to analyse the results. The last objective pursued by this Ph.D. course is to give to the next researchers the possibility of working concretely in advanced research laboratories. For this reason, we thought to internationalise the formative path, by introducing in the teaching body, (and organically also their institutes) a series of researchers (whose reputation is testified by their curricula) that since many years are active in the research's areas which are object of the Ph.D. course. This will give to those who participate to the Ph.D. course the possibility of getting experience and of taking part in stages inside their in institutes, by encouraging know how exchanges and the realization of communal researches. Moreover, the researcher can follow the pupils at a distance, through a series of cooperation instruments (cooperative work on net) actually available. Moreover the internationalisation foresees the access of foreign subjects to the Ph.D. course, the organization of communal formative ways and eventually the recognition of the title in both the countries between which is made in the convention. The exploration and the study of the advanced technologies, the analysis and the application of the different research methods, the use of the communication instruments applied in the research context and the concrete experience in the international research laboratories, in highly interdisciplinary areas, give to the formative path that has to be realised for the Ph.D. course in Psychology of Programming and Artificial Intelligence, features of novelty, stressing on those factor that encourage the didactic innovation and a high quality training.
